Buzkashi
THE NATIONAL GAME OF AFGHANISTAN
Exclusively Afghan, Buzkashi as it is played today, reflects the boldness and fierce competitive spirit of the Afghan people. The great equestrian tradition of which Buzkashi developed, goes back as far as the time of Alexander the Great. Many people associate Buzkashi with the notorious Genghis Khan. Actually, the Mongo horsemen were adapt at advancing swiftly on enemy campsides and, without dismounting, swooping up sheep, goats, and other pillage at a full gallop. It is claimed that as Buzkashi demands the highest degree of horsemanship, courage and physical strength.

THE CHAPANDAZ
The chapandaz(the rider) is only half of the game. As it has for centuries, northern Afghanistan breeds horses of exceptional endurance and speed, ingredients crucial to Buzkashi. The game is traditionally played during winter and early spring. At Nawroz (Afghan New Year)a 10 Day Buzkashi festival is held in Kunduz.
